Re: Cosmetic Surgery Anyone ?

My feeling is that most modifications are not to win shows but to extract more money for what would otherwise be a marginal fish. After all the bottom line is to go where the money is. Winning a show is nice but is only indirectly a money earner. managing to squeeze a modified fish through a judging...

Re: Can you have to much Filtration?????

Scaling it all down a bit this is a situation you often see in people setting up a Q-tank for new koi. I have often seen people with a running Q-tank with a small fish or two in it to keep the filter running. Others will have a Q-tank running with nothing at all and expect the bacteria to magically ...

Re: Euthanasia

I'm with welsh_kai_boy. As someone who has been an angler for years I have dispatched perhaps a thousand fish using a simple priest (or a wrench or the handle od a big screwdriver etc>) and ain't one of em ever come back to complain. Seriously though, in the years gone by I have heard some re...

Re: Potassium Permanganate

I was thinking more along the lines that PP is not allowed on aircraft and should it get on a post flight... That said, mail from the UK is slower than mail from Tasmania (seriously, I once ordered something in Tasmania on a Sunday evening and recieved it on Wednesday morning) :D The only way post f...

Re: BHM - Why?

So called "Lava rock" Is actually a bi-product of burning coal and not real rock at all. Sources of "feather-rock"or Pumice would be places with volcanic activity past or present. My first thoughts would be Italy or Greece, Iceland. I did a little digging on the internet for &quo...

Re: bakki shower

well according to the BH experts you would want double your pond volume going through the shower so if your tower is 4 foot tall that would be a pump with a nominal out put of about 10-12,000 g/h static and 7,000 at the head.

Re: Alternatives?

Sadly it looks like most of the "Alternatives" are higher up the hit list than PP itself. Note, that the USA has PP in category I out of II but Europe has 3 categories has yet to add PP to any of them (yet!) Such a shame that people doing bad things to make loads of money pass their wrong ...

Re: Winter Feeding

I am very much in the camp of those who believe our koi must be kept above a minimum temperature but my limits are just lower. (but i do have them). Pictures of fish beneath an Ice covered pond I find horrendous and would never recommend to anyone under any circumstances. In my early days I endured t...

Re: Winter Feeding

As far as NOT FEEDING goes... How long would it take in cold winter conditions between 7*C and 10*C to actually harm a koi due to not having been fed? Ok I Know alot depends on the condition the fish is in at the start but let us assume it is a heathy 65 cm long female with not an unusually high amo...

Re: Winter Feeding

Pretty much the same as Dunc with a minumum at >7*C. This is the temperature I am usually at in the winter. I'm at about 10*C at the moment. Forked out for new covers this fall and they work a treat keeping te pond muct warmer than the old ones did. As for being tight... well I bought a new cloverle...
