Re: dead fish
No mind bender, Dizzy, I would need to take some tests to be sure but, based on your description, it sounds like they suffocated when the aeration stopped. Large koi need more oxygen than small koi so the larger ones died first and that meant that the smaller ones could hang on with just the natural...

Re: Scrape
Carl, I've just posted my comment on that thread. Basically, boxing in your shower will be fine provided you have some ventilation.

Re: Trickle Tower
Carl, Stating the obvious, one of the features of a shower type filter is that the water tumbles down over the media which strongly aerates it and helps gas off unwanted dissolved gasses, chiefly carbon dioxide and ammonia. If you hermetically sealed your shower in a box then, after a short time, th...

Re: Scrape
Carl, I normally leave answering medical questions to Duncan since he is the expert in this area but white spot needs prompt attention since it can kill very quickly so in case he is busy and doesn't see this post today, I will answer this one. White spot is easy to diagnose; the fish will have area...

Re: Trickle Tower
Carl, That's a difficult question to answer because, in order to reduce nitrate in the pond water you need what is called denitrifying media i.e. a porous media where facultative bugs can live and reduce nitrate and phosphate in order to obtain their oxygen. Manufacturers of ordinary, non-porous med...

Re: UV for chlorine removal, Anyone?
I don't know the cost because I've never considered that as a method of dechlorination before but my gut feeling is that, with the initial set up cost and the replacement cost of high power UV bulbs, in order to obtain a flow rate similar to an activated carbon canister, it wouldn't be a cheaper met...

Re: UV for chlorine removal, Anyone?
Chlorinated water, exposed to aeration and sunlight has a half life of about three hours which is why aeration can reduce a typical tap water level of chlorine to negligible proportions in a few hours. The chloramine half life under the same conditions is about 12 days. A standard UV will accelerate...

No problem, you ask questions and I'll answer but, I've written huge amounts of stuff on my site so if I've already written a comprehensive answer to your question, I'll point you to it. BTW Many people want to know the complicated stuff so it had to be included but I've deliberately kept it in scie...

Re: Advice on Easy pod and vortex chamber
Hi Manky Owing to the levels in the garden there isn't enough room for anoxic filtration. However the pond rises in a series of shelves formed by bedrock so I'm now thinking that I could create a beach of 8-10 baskets at the shallow end completely covered in flat stone to hide them and still use th...

Re: Advice on Easy pod and vortex chamber
BTW you don't have to replace all the baskets every five years, you are advised that the Laterite will be slowly be used up so you might have to add some more to the basket every five to ten years and you can do that by just scooping out some cat litter, pouring in some more Laterite and replacing w...
