I have a bit of spawning going on in my pond over the last few days. There were 3 females which really needed to spawn and two of these have done and very succesfully. There is still one more to go and i'm hoping over the next couple of days it will.
I'm not interested in keeping the eggs and don't have the facilities to keep them / raise them either.
BUT....
I do not want all koi spawned and as soon as the remaining one i'm concerned about does then i want to put a stop to it? Question is - - - - HOW?
I seem to remember something about Malachite stopping spawning? Is this correct or is there other ways? (I cannot separate the males).

Hi Greg
I'm sure I have read somewhere malachite Geen was used to stop the little sods doing what nature intended,I have put a sign up no hanky panky in this pond not too sure if it will work though

Hi Greg,
When Dunc was advising on getting my doitsu ochiba to spawn he mentioned using pp to strip the pheromones from the pond, but if you have a read of the post Prolapsed Vent, I think the full explanation is in there.
It was intended to halt a 'mass spawning event' so should work.

pp will stop them spawning dead in their tracks, however if the females are prime and fit and ready for spawning you will only postpone it, nothing will stop what nature has set in motion you can only delay the inevitable unless you can seperate out the males or females then it of couse will not take place eventually the female will re-sync into a normal metabolic state as far as breeding goes
in japan they keep the brood females away from the breeding males all year till they are ready once spawned they are once again seperated

Re: Stopping Spawning?
Hi Duncan could it be harmful in any way stopping a spawning would it affect the re-absorption of eggs if they were ready to go. ?
Re: Stopping Spawning?
yes a good question mate
The honest answer is who knows? i have not seen any data on this anywhere, but i would think not because like i say if nature has predetermined that this fish will spawn; she will spawn one way or the other you will only postpone the spawning.
i hear what you say, these eggs have been fully matured, but dont forget a koi will never shed all her roe anyway. even with hand stripping there will always be roe left inside yet she survives to next season. she will either reabsorb these or somehow putting them back into stock for next season. as to if having a larger stash of matured eggs inside her than normal because we stopped her spawnig till next year would cause her any further harm to what normally would be the case, i dont think that data is available so we can only guess.

Re: Stopping Spawning?
I would love nothing more than to get mine to spawn, not for rearing any young but I have a 6 year old shiro (one of Duncan's fry that I got from Bob) and she is so ready to spawn she is fit to burst. We had a spell a month or so ago where it was the hottest it has been since I have been here and I have a male Tancho (now named Randy) who was doing his best to try to get spawning going, he didn't know who to chase first bless him, but the weather has returned to very cold wet and very very windy and the pond temps have dropped from 15 to 13, the koi think winter has returned. Is it safe for a female to re-absorb every year
