Hi All, is green water bad for the koi as my pond had an algee bloom a few weeks back,I thought it was the cheap food I was using but not too sure now because I went back to my normale food and the pond is still green,
Not changed the UV bulb for a few years as I never needed it till now,the TDS in now 260,normaly it's 198-200,the koi are still eating and don't seem bothered,I can only see them when they come up to eat,but are they safe.
Regards Geoff

Re: Green water
Hi Geoff,
Yes they are safe but if your going into winter and you cant see all the fish are 100% spot on so i think i would get your UV changed and hope it clears soon.
Had you treated with anything by any chance ?

Re: Green water
Hi Geoff
Green water does not do the fish any harm in fact I have heard that they thrive in these conditions as long as long as all your nitrites etc are at the correct readings. In fact it's us that likes it as clear as Gin the fish come from muddy ponds in there natural environment and they do well in these conditions.
I change my UV every spring to prevent this so I can at least see the fish and can be aware of any disease etc.

Thanks for your replies,
Gazza,I did put a small dose of PP in when the water went dirty as I thought it was the food,I lost my first Japanese koi a few weeks ago she was 30",but she had been off all summer, not eating and just staying on her own about 2ft from the top of the water,no clamped finns just not herself she never had problem as all the scraps were fine and no problems with any of the other koi
When I had this koi 6 years ago she had all sorts of problems and went very dry with no mucus,a couple of years ago she came out of Winter with bacterial problems and needed a few injections to get her right,so it's my thoughts that she had been very weak through to so many problems in her past, she was a friendly koi and the first one to hand feed.
Regards Geoff

Re: Green water
Hi Geoff
Sorry to jump in again.
PP acts as an algicide as well as clearing bacteria etc so that wouldn't be the cause of green water it can make it have a yellow tinge as it wears down having said that, Guaranteed to be an algi bloom that has started, I'm amazed you have gone so long without a uv to keep it clear, would love to know your secret.
Sorry to hear about the fish you lost I can honestly say that's the worst part of the hobby.
If there's any spelling mistakes apologies as I'm using the wife's iPad think I should stick to using the computer at least I have spell check on there.

Hi Koi man dave
Thanks again for your reply,It's no secret I have green net under a polycarb roof on my pergola over the pond so not much sunlight gets on the pond in the Summer, the downside is the pond never gets above 21c but my heater keeps it at that,
My 110w UV is very arkward to change the bulbs(bad planning)I'm not Obsessed with growth or sparkling clear water more into the health and friendly nature of koi.
Regards Geoff
