Bob,
Heres a thought could you leave one of those swimming pool hoovers in the settlement all the time but on a timer You know the one that just moves about on its own, like a flat fish.
Hey presto NO MAINTENANCE
Just top up via R/O & filtered water
This way you can put all your spare time into your showers
New Year, new Project!

Yes guys just given it's first hoovering. Just before making this conversion I had a lot of balnket week in my pond, dosed with pond balance, then started the conversion. Well all the weed died and the settlement chamber was full of it, so a hoovering I had to go!
I've been told that for my 5000 gallon/hour turnover of this filter system, that this chamber is too small. I have found that on the 2 x 6" outlets to the biological chamber where I have pipe with loads of 8mm holes, that these holes have been collecting the blanket weed fines. Hopefully once the balanket weed is fully gone (just about now anyway) it will not clog up any more. I may well experiment with the turnover, lowing it a little until I get it right.
The hoovering went very well though. The 1.5" pipe through the side wall has been connected up to an old Yamitt pump (one of the blue ones) located in my shed. The outlet through the shed wall waters the garden.
I used a length of 1.5" straight pipe connected to a flexible I bought from a swimming pool shop during the week. Once primed it was easy. Hope fully with most of the weed now gone, I can see if it will worjk as it is supposed to, then just hoover it 'once-a-month' or so - lol
