Hi Gazza;

Thanks for the prompt answer about using softened water as a source for the RO system. I have switched mine to the softened supply. BUT now is the why question, why is softened water kinder to our RO membranes than the normal cement that comes out of my water pipe ?

Is it because the calcium salts have been replaced by sodium salts by the ion exchange resin and that sodium salts are more soluble than calcium salts and easier to flush out or is there another reason?

Yes basically RO units where made to work with salty water without all the rubbish we have in our water so soften water works well.

Before i run a softener i used to change my pre-filter about every month

Thanks for that it makes sense as the RO units were initially developed to make fresh water out oF sea water.
A follow on question........how wise is it to use softened water through an ion exchange water softner for bulk water changes where the water has not gone through my RO unit ?

mmmmm not sure on that one young man as its something i have never tried....i just do it the old fashion way and leave the RO on most of the time

I likethe young man bit.....and the RO is on all the time trickle in and out. But there are occasions, leaks etc when I need to do a large volume replacement so can I safely use water where all the CA++ have been replaced with Na+ ?
