Simply Koi and More Koi

Has anybody tried using IM diuretics (frusemide would be the natural choice although it need some thinking through) in the mangament of drops ?

I was thinking using diuretics as an adjunct to current therapies.

Thoughts ?

there is no real need mate i can suck the whey out of a fish with salt eazy peazy but if the kidney is screwed the damn thing will bloat all over again

I was thinking about the acute (single dose) treatment of potentially reversible acute tubular necrosis with single high dose diurectics not the maintenance. I f I don't ask I won't learn ?

How would your treatment work to stop the Dropsy and if the problem is with the Kidney will it help in any way or just revert back once back to normal

Hi I aways treat it the same way Salt CT and heat in my qt I have saved a few this way but as said if the kidneys are shot you have no chance at all of saving the koi

the trouble is in normal every day life without dropsy a koi is already producing a tremendous amount of very dilute urine when the kindent can no longer keep up thats when dropsy occurs

in these circumstances salt lightens the osmotic load allowing the kidney to catch back up

so to tell the truth i dont see trying to increase urine output lightening the load on an otherwise failing kidney if that makes sense?

Having given it some thought.... I need to do some more reading but there are a family of diuretics which produce an increase in free water clearance and if given early is dome kidney diseases to the formation of protein casts in the nephrons and generally help the kidney through the acute phase.

In Koi who are acutely ill (not chronic) with drops, are their kidneys still pumping out urine or do they close down i.e. acute renal failure (shut down)... cannot find a straight answer in any of mu sources, would welcome your input.
