Simply Koi and More Koi

Hi Guys,

I didn't want to hijack the filtration thread so thought i would post a new topic to get us thinking

So what do we think happens when we treat our ponds with a particular treatment be it PP,CT,MG&F or any of the others

Is there anything particular you do for some reason when treating with you treatments be it stand on one leg and hope for the best or isolate the filters or anything you do be it right or wrong we want to know

Basically anything you do or use when treating a pond for maintenance or parasite or preventative treatments let get some banter going and see what we come up with as it could be an interesting debate if we get it going

I turn filter off for the 1st hour of any chemical treatment I add to eradicate something unwanted in the water. Works for me, and the lower concentration after the 1st hour will hopefully not kill the filter.

Hi Gazza I turn off my UV and protein skimmer but that is all everything else runs as normal

I shutdown the main airated K1 filter line for an hour when PPing, leave the Tickle tower on for O2. UV off

A good start so some of you turn "stuff" off when treating is this when treating with anything or any particular parasite

Having only ever treated pond with PP for bugs and blanket answer for the dreaded weed.I leave the filters open,turn off uv,put extra air stones in pond.I even put the pump that i use for vaccuming on the pond, with outlet pipe few inches above surface.Seems to work for me no deaths yet.
Im sure someone will say why we turn things on/off.I leave the filters on because to me their full of pond water so somewhere in the filters must be some parasites or eggs to kill.

I have wondered weather to only turn my protein skimmer off for an hour just in case there are any nasties lurking in there or lower the water level in it so it wont produce foam but the media will get a flow of treatment over it.It's a Tornado protein skimmer,I assume it will remove treatments in the pond any one know the answer to this ???

I did wonder about turning off the shower but went for it .PP dosent seem to stain the media.Not sure about other traetments.

I personally do not change anything on my systems when treating i just leave all as it is and then keep an eye on things to make sure everything is OK and the fish are cool with whats going on as you never know if something is going to go wrong. One thing for sure don't not rush home from work and throw in the treatment and then pop down the pub or at night always try to treat at a time where you can carry out the treatment nice and controlled so no rushing around and this way it cuts down the percentages of you cocking it up.....it happens trust me Ive been there got the tea shirt

When I use PP I turn off the uv, Add extra air to the pond, and leave the filters running,whether my thinking is right or wrong, I assume nasties in the pond, can mean nasties in the filter

Good advice there Gazza I have seen many problems caused by treating and walking away,I check my ponds every 20 minuets or so when I have a treatment in the pond.

I have turned my UV off for ages now so thats never a problem when treating,

Everything I put in the pond Medication or Bicarb I get a bucket nearly full of pond water,put an airline in the pond till it stops bubbling then finger over one end into the bucket of pond water,put medication in the bucket then leave it to syphon slowly into the pond,

The reason for this is,I once put some MG&F in the pond too quick and one koi looked the worse for it.

I leave everything on except the UV when ever I have treated the pond as for most parasites at some stage in their life are free swimming and will be in all parts of the system, if parasites were just on the fish it would make more sense to me to dip the fish individually rather than blitz all the bacteria in the system. I think we forget sometimes that even the pond itself has colonies of bacteria on the sides which help us and if destroying these with things like PP can be avoided it should be..
I turn the UV off because at some point I was told that it broke down chemicals before they treated the fish.
Is there any evidence for this or is it another urban legend

Like Stu, I leave everything as it is when I use treatments, nothing gets turned off or bypassed ... my UV has not been on for nearly 2yrs.
