Simply Koi and More Koi

I was doing some pond maintenance today and noticed one of my koi looked a bit off sulky and occasionally clamping it's fins no flashing from any of the koi and I check them twice a day, the water is spot on and everything is spotless,so I did a scrape and found flukes and a fair amount too.The koi were scraped prior to going into winter and all scrapes were parasite free,so where they have come from I don't know I have scraped my other pond all clear and my QT all clear not that there was any chance of cross contamination,the pond is at 6 DG I have done a dose of Superverm and all the koi are fine at the moment 7 1/2 hours after the treatment went in no flashing and no sign that I have dosed the pond.I will do follow up scrapes in three days time and do a 15% water change,I hope it works as well in cold water as it does in the warmer temps.

I thought you were a convert to the "new" praziquantel commercial treatment?

I have the view that flukes get triggered by light by the way. So these bright(er) spells we are having seem to set them off for an early spring "hi, I'm a fluke, please try and kill me" operation.

Sorry to say the same as Tom but i also though you was using the new fluke treatment had you used this prior to winter and what made you opt for s/v as i find this a little to aggressive and it can damage the internal organs

Hi Tom yes I did trial the new fluke treatment and it did work very well sadly I only had enough to treat one pond.And with the price of the new treatment being so expensive and having always used superverm with no problems in the past (also Duncan said ok at low temps)I thought I would take that route.

Lee sorry to hear about these fluke, yes it brings that praziquantel into a different light

the bottom line here is there is nothing new about this, our yankie cousions have had this for years but they use 100% pure prazi even they get mixed results

but what got my goat was you cant call somehting that already exists ( AKA Prazi pond) by a new name and go around claiming you have invented a new fluke treatment

MOF about maybe 3-4 years ago now i sourced a supply here in the UK and contacted the vets to see what the score was they left me in no doubt that if i tried to sell it they would see me in court obvioulsey things have changed if your a member vet

this product is primarily a very powerfull equine horse wormer available in paste powder and liquid form as has been said very very expensive to buy in a typical does for a typical 2-3000 gallon pond costing around £80 , to me this was a no brainer flubenol is better and much, much cheaper, even fluke M is ok if you foget there instruictions and mix it with acetone so i cant see for the life of me why anyone would bring anything to market thats out gunned and out priced ?

i think it fair to say the americans have also suffered a lot of fish deaths as a result of using Prazi

BTW i deleted Myles post about this because the post was not factual ! it was not in fact a new treatment it was a very old treatment someone else rather disshonestly had renamed and as he had cut and pasted the same text all of the koi forum net iot was obvious to me he had a vested interest so it went

Hi All koi look fine this morning I will let you know what the scrapes say in a couple of days.
Just to add this was NOT the pond I tested the prazi on that pond was clear on re scraping

good man Lee sorry for jumping to conclusions i should have known Tommy "2" ponds this was obviously the other one of the two

fact remains that prazi is still tooo expensive and too unpredictable

good data point for the guys and gall about the temp with S/V though

Never been a big fan of SV! Def gets rid of the flukes, but has always seemed hit or miss with some people having bad reactions for no obvious reason :s
Much prefer telmin, been using it pretty much exclusively for last 5 yrs With great results! Just rem not to use it if there's any goldfish in pond ( not a pretty sight if used with them in there). Fluke m as Duncan says mixed with acetone is my second choice

Mark, you beat me to it ... I'm a huge fan of telmin, aside from the fact that a single packet is the right amount for my setup, the 'slack' in the dosage rates actually make it really easy to use and has been my weapon of choice when dealing with flukes.

Hi All the koi still look fine 24 hours on,no sulking flashing in fact no sign that I have treated the pond at all,I will have to wait a couple more days to see what the scrapes say to see if it was a success.

I just dropped a few pellets in the pond as they were looking for food and they have been feeding
I would like to say I would not have used the SV had Duncan said it not was fine to do so,I don't do gun-ho treatments.

Hi I have done a 15% water change and a re scrape to see if the SV has done it's job.Sadly it has only reduced the numbers slightly and the pond temp has dropped to 5 DG.So on Saturday I will be using Fluke M after another water change,I will let you know how that go's.

How about Flubenol Lee have you tried that before

Hi Gazza no I have not used it,superverm has always worked in the past but it was a much higher temps.I spoke to the boss earlier about this and as I have fluke M (I need to get some acetone first) I will be trying that.
