Green Water

Post by tomc »

No, not the normal question... but....

How do you get water to go green in an indoor system?

Currently: limited natural light (can't change that), 70W halide, 2 x 60W aquariums, on 2000 gallons.

Would be interested to hear thoughts.

Now my outdoor pond is as green as you like given the UV has burnt out just at the wrong time of year! (And no, I'm not going to pump water from one to another as the garage is in QT mode!)

Tom,

There are two things that would slow down the rate at which an indoor pond would go green, lack of light and the fact that the algae spores that are drifting about in the atmosphere are shut outside.

A bit more light would be better but you seem to have just about enough light at the moment, so I would suggest that a bucket of green water from the outdoor pond will kick start the algae and then it will multiply, in the same way that a bit of mature media will kick start a bio-filter.

Ps, just had a re-read. If "I'm not going to pump water from one to another as the garage is in QT mode!" means that you don't want to transfer any water from the outside pond as a sort of biosecurity measure, could you open the garage doors to let some algae spores in or leave a bucket of water outside in full sunlight until it goes green and use that water to seed the indoor tank?

Sid

Actually, I'm happy enough to dump water from the main pond into the garage. Just now to "swap it" around. I'll give it a go.... can't get much more a swamp than the main pond!

PS: Was considering adding another halide BUT I'm on a campaign to try to reduce my electricity from its current astronomic usage!
