Hi All

Can anyone give me some advie please, I have just gone out to the pond and found a dead baby starling in the pond. There was also a lot of feathers in the water. What I concerned about if the koi have been messing about with it. If they have grabbed its legs those claws looked very long and sharp, is there any chance the koi could of hurt themselves. There are only 2 koi in the pond at the moment so if there is anything I should look out for can someone please advise

Thanks

Hi Kim
A 20% water change might be a good idea, apart from that just keep an eye on how the koi behave.

Regards Geoff

Hi Geoff

Thank you for your reply. I noticed when I got the bird out it seemed pretty bald on the stomach area, then found loads of feathers in the water, so what I am really worried about is the Koi grabbed the legs and have caught their mouths inside with the birds claws. I will do the water change tomorrow and keep a close on the Koi, I think it may be treat time so I can get them feeding from my hand so I can look inside their mouths.

I have had a dead bird before but it was a tiny blue tit and the claws were tiny compared to the starlings.

Thanks again for you help

Kim,

I don't think you have anything to worry about. The chance of koi damaging themselves on the claws or the bird introducing a bacterial infection that will affect your fish are remote but there isn't anything you could do now anyway.

Just follow Geoff's advice and keep an eye on them for a while to make sure that there are no infections as a result of scratches needing attention or unusual behavior due to any other infection that might result from bacteria getting into the water.

But if they get runny noses and start sneezing, that might mean .......

Sorry I couldn't resist!
