Simply Koi and More Koi

Hi all,

I need to treat for whitespot in my QT (1000l/220g tank) 16-18*C, all other parameters in check.

I have a bottle of Kusuri Malachite Green and today I acquired a litre of 37% Formaldehyde (Formalin)

So my question is how much Formalin do I need to add to the MG for treatment?

My issue is the dose rates are for 30% formalin and I have 37% Formaldehyde so I wanted to be sure so not to overdose.

Personally I have never had an issue using these dose rates for 35/37% formalin in the past.

Can I guarantee you wont? - NO - but just my experience says to use those dose rates in my pond is OK. I guess you could always minus 7% from the volume you need to use to treat but most treatments have a "safety factor" built in to people proof them.

A bit of maths pedantry for you.

A 37% solution is 23% stronger than a 30% solution. (Or looking at it in terms of reducing a dosage; 30% is 19% weaker than 37%)

If you ignored the built in safety factor and wanted to get exactly the same strength in the pond using a 37% solution instead of 30%, you would have to reduce the dose rate by 19%.

because of the way formaldehyde behaves in water its gone in around 12 hours max if there is a high organic load it will not even last half that, so it makes little difference dose 37% at 10 ml to 176 gallons the exact same as 30% you just get a bigger bang (albeit momentarily) for your money, its not a life threatening dose, nowhere near.

Thanks for the advice Duncan, always good to know one is not going to cook the koi in a vat of chemicals!

At temps between 16-18*C is it okay to treat every three days for whitespot with an FMG mix?

And if so should a partial water change be carried out before each new dose?

at 16-18deg C i would be leaving 5 CLEAR days between doses. Then a 15% water change before re-treating.
