Preperations for Winter

Post by Markey »

Any general Advice?

I do have a specific question as well.
I am heated and reducing 1 degree a week ATM, and currently at 15.5 degrees, going to set at around 8 or 10 degrees and cover through winter

Due to heater kicking in every night I have been diverting past the shower (Clarity CL3 with K3 media)
As it is on the heater line, so seems pointless letting the heat go to waste in the shower.
I divert to the underwater return at night, and switch back on in the morning.

In the next couple of weeks I want to take the clarity off , give it a good clean and store for the winter.
What is the best thing to do with the media??
I can either give it a good wash and store it dry in the unit over winter, which means maturing again in the spring , or is it worth hanging it in a bag in the pond to maybe give it a head start in the spring.
Or will this just give a possible area for a build up of crud and nasties???
Any ideas?

hi

* degrees is not a good place to be the reason as follows

a koi's immune system does not function below 12c and at 8c it would have no immune system where as aeromonas and psuedomonas would be very active at that temperature so it would be party time for the bug's its what's known as "aeromonas alley" . "Aeromonas alley" is a point in the temperature range where the koi has no immune system but bacteria are quite active

so heat to 14c just above the point where the immune system will work and keep the koi's immune system on line

failing that don't heat at all and allow the temp to plummet below 8C to the point where the bugs are in stasis as well

if you heat to 8-10c i can guarantee in the spring you will have fish full of holes and ulcers

Thanks Duncan,
Never thought of that. (and I think i've had some dodgy advice too LOL)
But sounds very good advice.

Maybe explains problems friends have had this spring with the mild winter and compounded with a bad summer.

Cheers
