Revised PP protocol
We are aiming to attain 3-4 hours purple and NO MORE THAN 4 HOURS! But observe the following points
it always worth checking your scales are still accurate a 5p piece weighs 3.25gm a 10p piece 6.5 gm
1. Measure the amount of PP for the volume. dissolve in boiling water
2. Take nothing for granted always re-measure, “Mantra” measure twice treat once.
3. Put in 1/2 of the dose and watch the water colour attains purple and stays purple.
4. Mix the 1/2 dissolved dose in a bucket with water and pour it around the edges of the pond but not directly onto any Koi.
5. Keep filters in the treatment loop to ensure circulation also as trichodina can live in muck in the filters.
6. Use air stones to help with pond circulation and to add extra O2.
7. Never leave the treated pond unobserved during the entire Tx.
8. If any fish start to look very stressed “AT ANY POINT“ in the Tx, particularly if they are gilling hard/rapidly or piping at the top, deactivate the Tx with ST( sodium thiosulfate "dechlorinator ") do not use hydrogen peroxide for this purpose.
9. If the water turns brown/tea coloured quickly ( < LESS THAN 1.5-2 HOURS), mix up and add the other 1/2 dose. Otherwise, do nothing but observe for a total 4 hours at which time, if the water colour is still purple/pink, deactivate with ST( sodium thiosulfate).
10. If the water turns brown before the 4 hours (but after the 2 hour mark), the Tx is finished .Please do not add extra PP at this point.
11. PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW PURPLE COLOUR TO CONTINUE BEYOND 4 HOURS
12 . IF AFTER NEUTRALISING THE PP WITH SODIUM THIO FISH ARE STILL SUFFERING DO LARGE WATER CHANGES THEN SALT TO 1/4 OZ PER GALLON ( the ST used to stop the PP will continue to dechlorinator added water so pile the water in watching the temp does not drop to much)
Note: with a successful treatment the 2-hour mark could be changed to say 3½ hours and at any time in between , i.e., when the water turns brown
NB TX = Treatment
heres the maths for working PP dose rates out in the UK
Its pond volume divided by 220 gallons times 1.5
let’s say its a 3000 pond 3000 /220 = 13.63 x 1.5 = 20.45 gm
if you’re not sure always have somebody check your working out.
heres a table of dose rates for PP when you have worked out your dose pick the pond volume nearest to yours and compare see if your in lign with that, if your pond volume is slightly less the the nearest and you have worked it out to more than that nearest you know you have got something wrong
this table is for 1.5PPM
1K = 6.8 gm
2K = 13.6 gm
3K = 20.4 gm
4K = 27.2 gm
5K = 34 gm
6K = 40 gm
7K = 47.7 gm
8K = 54.5 gm
9K = 61.3 gm
10K= 68.2 gm
here’s the 2PPM KMNO4 does rates for 1 to 10,000 gallon ponds
1k = 9.1 gm
2K = 18.2 gm
3K = 27.3 gm
4K = 36.3 gm
5K = 45.4 gm
6K = 54.5 gm
7K = 63.6 gm
8K = 72.7 gm
9K = 81.8 gm
10K = 90.9 gm
These are for UK figures
