Aeromonas, another one checks out

Post by Duncan »

hi guys a takeda showa checked out on me , same MO as the yamatoya all infected with Aeromonas under the belly where you could not see :(
my pond is spotless and i think clean or dirty ponds have no bearing on aeromonas well let me rephrase that whiole you can epxect this from a dirty pond equally a clean pond is no guarantee of being clear either

these infection have all been classic infections caused by hugging the bottom a lot during the real cold temperatures so ihave concluded for me its not cost effective to try and save a few bob , i have probably saved around £150 but blown in excess of £1000

so thats an omosako shiro admittedly it was not doing much, a very nice yamatoya kohaku that even bill oakley commented on when he was at out house , and finbally my male breeding showa which was spectacular it had a red spot on its head and this spoty was completely outlined in sumi in a near perfect line

mind you some of it was being ultra busy with the site and all kinds of stuff taking my eye off the ball

so i have started raising the temperature again im now at 11c so its no more natural winter temps for me iwill raise again today that will put me at my benchmark figure od 12c

cant wait to get the covers off to check them all out

Hi Dunc;

Really sorry to hear about this you must feel gutted, but there is s positive side, by being so honest with your losses it reassures us newbies that these problems even happens to the experts. Sometimes we new koi keepers feel that everything that happens is all our own fault through ignorance. Thanks for the openness and honesty.

Hi Duncan
Sorry for your loss mate,a hard lesson learnt,I have kept the tempreture at 10.5 for the last 3 Winters and only had a problem with my big(to me 30")ISA Showa last year she must have been laying on the bottom,I never noticed till I saw a problem under her gills, when she came out I was horrified to see her,a few injections and she was better.

Kind Regrads Geoff

Hi Dunc,

Yes a real bummer

In the other post i did people said about clean ponds and i think i did say then does not have to be dirty knowing full well that this type of bacteria will live in anything and its only when something goes wrong that the buggers will jump on it big time

I take it from now on you will be leaving the winter temperature a bit higher as you say to save a few £££ has cost you considerably more.

Hi Peter,

Its interesting as i am a big believer in letting people know if i have a problem as there are many out there who do and never say anything as they think people will think bad of them (especially some of the big boys :D ) but it happens and it happens to anyone and if we was to never tell or show this then we would all never learn. So i am not someone who keeps cocking it all up i am just unlucky with fish and that my excuse

Sorry to hear that Duncan not a nice thing to deal with, I have gone the other way from no heat over winter to a min of 7 with no apparent issues but will need to have a really good look at them once my back is in a better state

hi guys

like i say ive been mega busy MOF its sunday morning 5.32 am and im sitting at my desk at work , iv e been working 7 days and when i get home am bushed plus gettuing my new years chemical stock in its my excuse any way what i will say is anyone who tells you he aint had any problems i would view with some sceptisism it pays to be honest, that way people know you shoot the truth and can believe waht you say

yes i spent a pound to save sixpence woint do that again given that i have never lost a fish in winter before once i started heating

the moral of this stopry is ( i think) if you going to let the temperatures drop dont waht ever you do cover them up. first theres no point second you cant see properly whats going on

Hi Duncan, sorry to here about your loss! Don't know if you missed my last post on this but you didn't reply to my question as to whether you think this could be caused by the stress of being heat ramped to 30oC and then back to 10 over space of 5-6 days? When your stat went faulty.
personally I don't think the 10oC is the cause of the problem! Have many customers who run these temps covered/uncovered over winter with no I'll effects. Indeed a few of them have until recently kept their koi at 15 all winter. But with increase in oil/gas prices over last 2 winters they run this new regime.
