Re: Tail Tube Damage
Hi Dunc,
Thanks very much for the offer, and if its possible to bring her over to you tomorrow is that ok? I shall give you call to confirm details.
I was planning to treat first thing in the morning, as she is in the VAT with the salt at the moment, but if you think it needs doing now I can get her out tonight.
I dont seem to be seeing things clearly on the scale front, is it the three further into the body you mean?
Thanks,
Mark

The 3 scales nearest the tail at the top. Look "yellow" in the photos. Tom
Re: Tail Tube Damage
Tom,
Thanks, that's the consensus of opinion then, as Mr Norse mentioned earlier that they looked dodgy, just wanted to check Dunc hadnt seen anything we had missed.
Cheers,
Mark

Re: Tail Tube Damage
Overnight in the 0.6% salt solution has brought on a response, with the original wound site opening up again, and as the second pic shows, finally gone through to the other side of the tail.
Decision finally made to cut my losses, and just hope I am still not too late sacrificing the lower part of the tail.
A widespread loss of scales on the other side has meant removal on mass, also under the tail as well, where you can see them now proud of the body on section.
The stump has been oxidised with HP and merch & sealed, with the remaining body getting swabbed out with betadine and lock & sealed as trying to avoid the widespread damage I have done before trying to treat too aggressively.
Time will tell if this is too late, and should have been done long before now, but we shall see.
Dunc, I have PM'd you.

Did you have an examination of the original wound to see if there was anything "in" the wound? Or anything rubbing on it to stop it closing?
Hopefully with heat, salt, and perhaps some CT or similar you can keep it under control now.

Tom,
I am certain it was the constant friction between loose cartilage and the base of the body that stopped and healing.
Fingers crossed (fingers are tired now!)

Hi Mark,
Nice one mate you seem to be getting good at this and lets hope this starts to turn for the best.

Re: Tail Tube Damage
Well here are tonights update pics - yesterday added CT to hospital tank and now she is back in the main pond having just dosed with pp to reduce the bacterial load in the pond, as suggested by Dunc after the partial amputation. The pp should also help oxidise the wound as well, hopefully helping the healing process.
Healing is evident, but needed to remove some more scales on the 'other side' as it was, as a number were rough to the touch.
Interested in comments on the 'stub' of the peduncle as its still red raw, not healing over yet, so uncertain and hoping the pp may assist here.
Was also concerned that after bringer her around after the umpteenth 'knock out' she had a couple of very quick darts around the pond, one ending squarely against the side of the pond. I thought at this stage she was a gonner, seen that before, never usually ends well, but she is now swimming around in purple pond water.
OPR reads at 400 but as not treating parasites dont intend to raise any further.
Comments welcomed please.

If I chopped your pinkie off, how'd you think it might look after a couple of days ?
Looks quite positive, hopefully you can now leave it alone for a while to heal up.

Brilliant thread Mark.
It's a great shame you've had so much of a problem with this koi and I'm afraid I'm not expert enough to offer any comment or advice, but many thanks for documenting it all so well - I've certainly learned loads from reading about it!
Really hope things start to improve for you now, cos you certainly deserve it.
Cheers
Bob

Thanks Bob, I am certainly hoping she pulls around now, as I am leaving well alone for a bit.
She is a bit mopey, but still swimming about, just want to see her keen for food again, but its only been a couple of days.
