HOW LONG DOES MEDICATIONS LAST FOR

Post by kimr »

Hi All

I know we spoke about this subject quite a while ago, but could someone please hep with how long medications last for, and what to look for if they have gone off or stale. It is just for reference.

Thanks

hi kim
what medications are we talking about the list is long and varied

antibiotics go straw coloured, formaldehyde goes milky with white precipitate. in theory as long as you keep it dry PP-C/T-MG will last indefinitely
mercurochrome will last years as long as you keep the lid tight so the alcohol does not evaporate and even then its still usable

the list is endless

Hi Duncan

Thank you for the reply, I remember a few years ago you had said that the sale by dates put on medications were not right and that as long as they were stored correctly they would be fine and still some. I have a fair few topical treatements and just wondered how long they were actually ok for MFR-1 One Touch Lock'n'Seal and Lock'n'Seal + Mercurochrome. I would not be without the MRF-1 the Mercurochrome and Lock'n'Seal, these to me the most important parts of my medication chest.

We buy them because we need them or just in case, but in most cases hardly ever have to use them, so I was just wondering just how long they do actually last for. As for PP C.T and MG it is good to know they last for longer than stated on the pot's.
