Weighing up the options

Post by Gin Rin »

I now need to buy some scales to accurately weight medication, pond treatments etc.

It seems to me that I will need to get a set capable of measuring down to 0.01g

What is slightly confusing at the moment is the vast range in prices of the various scales on offer. I have found a shop selling jewellers scales that are a fraction of the cost and appear to fit the bill.

They can have a tare capability so a container’s weight can be zero’d before the substance to be weighed is added. They are small so portable and easily stored and can weigh from 0.01g to 100g with digital readout.

Is it really necessary to be paying £60 plus for a set of scales ? :?: Are these so expensive simply because they are being sold by a Koi outlets so they know us mugs will buy them ? :?

Are all scales created equal is perhaps what I am asking, I need to economise but I appreciate that some things are not worth trying to cut corners with.

I have a similar set of scales and paid 20 quid for em 10 years back. No need to go all fancy-smancy. A small set will do just fine.

Brain,

I'm with scott on this, any scale will do as long as it will weigh to the limit you want. Post the link on this thread so others may benifit!

It looks as if Chagoiboy has posted a similar link to what I was initially looking at.
I don’t like posting links to Ebay listings or shops, unless I have dealt with them in the past or know the product to be a good one.

I needed scales down to 0.01g accuracy and wanted them to be capable of at least 100g max weight to prevent accidental overload, and they had to have a tare capability.

Having looked at many scales over the past few days, I decided on the MyWeigh Palmscale version 7.0
http://www.myweigh.com/scales/pocket-and-mi ... ale_page-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They are more expensive than I had originally hoped to pay (although almost £5 of the cost is postage :evil: ) , but with the level of accuracy I want along with the higher than average maximum weight of 200g these seemed the best choice.

There is a calibration weight included and the magnetic cover can be used as a weighing platform. It also uses decent lithium batterys rather than triple A's or the like. The 30 year warranty did impress me as it shows a level of commitment from the manufactures as to the quality of the product. Similar scales seem to have 2 year warranty at best. Whether the guarantee actually covers more than the magnetic cover of course remains to be seen.

Thanks for all the feedback.
