Can I glue Acrylic tube to PVC fittings?

Post by eds »

Well the title says it all, can I stick Clear Acrylic tube (like this) to PVC fittings? If so do I use normal PVC pipe glue or something special?

Just in case you're wondering this isn't for my pond but to make a CO2 reactor for one of my planted tanks! I need to take the 50mm pipe down to 16mm hosetails by glueing fittings onto the pipe to threaded fittings then using reducers.

Use a solvent cement just clean all ends, wont it become fragile the more bits you glue together ??

Why cant you glue a 50mm cap/stop end onto the 50mm pipe and fit the 16mm into the stop end of the 50mm ??
Saves on too much glue.

Cheers Russ. There will only be two glue fittings. I'm going to glue a bend to threaded outlet on the bottom and a socket to threaded outlet on the top. Both of these will have one glue fitting to one threaded 1.5" fitting to allow me to simply put a threaded reducing bush to fit the 16mm pipe fitting in.

I just did a search and read that the usual PVC pipe glue wasn't the stuff to use as it won't bond to acrylic! Is that not true then? As this is going to be in my house I don't want it leaking later on!!!

In the end I'm probably going with clear PVC for this as I can't find a way that will guarantee a leak-free, permanent bond! After all these are inside the house, not in a filter!!! So if anyone wants some 50mm Clear PVC (for sight glasses maybe?) I may well have some 0.5m lengths to sell some time soon! You can convert 50mm PVC to 1.5" imperial directly with these sockets.

Edit: Forgot to say half a metre would work out at £5 plus postage.
