To Heat or Not to Heat ?????

Post by Gazza »

Hi Guys,

Just a spin off from another post but who when treating a fish would use heat at a high temperature or do you keep it lower when treating a bacterial infections :?: :?:

What do you think is the correct temperature when treating a fish in these conditions and why :?:

HI Gaza

As always a good question.

Duncan has put down the challenge so I will stick my neck out and get shouted at the most.

Most of the antibiotics that we regularly use are bactericidal and are most effective when the bacterial area actively multiplying. The exception is the tetracycline’s which are bacteriostatic, stop the cells dividing and let the body’s immune mechanisms kill the bugs.

Also at the end of the day it’s the fishes own immune system that is going to kill the last few bugs, the antibiotics are just going to reduce the burden to give the body’s own mechanism a chance, so again we are talking about warming carp up to ensure that their immune mechanisms are working effectively.

So I would go for heat.

I would also go for heat but not perhaps to the amount of 26deg C that was mentioned earlier.

I would aim for 20deg C+ - but past experience has taught me that i get a MUCH better healing rate at 22/23deg C so this would be my temp. Not gone above this so cannot comment as to weether it improves again at temps above this.

Hi Greg,

There is many people out there that will not go much above 20c some 22c and some wont go over 20c but when you are dealing with some of these nasty bacteria you have to jump on them and one of the things i would always do is heat it up always over 25 normally around 27c. This will not do any harm and is only there for a short time and the salt help the fish sort itself out as if i am doing this type of thing it will always have salt in there and a treatment.

Hi Gazza

Are we getting to the point of having a consensus on this ....... perhaps a thread where we post the consensus views on questions where we have reached one would be good ?
a) it would remind us what we have already tried to thrash out so we don't revisit things
b) it could be used as a ref of what the current consensus is that qw could cross refer to
