Hi Gazza,

Well I gotta say, you`ve got me there, not a thing I`ve ever seen on any of my fish. Had a bit of fin-rot a few years ago, but definately no holes. Are you SURE it`s common, not just a vitamin deficiency or something caused by your RO water ?? Got any pics???

Gazza,

I take it your referring to the little clean cut holes that look like a "hole punch" has been used on the membrane of the dorsal fin (only). I have had a few koi with this but never been able to solve it as such.

Hi Chris,

Yes as Greg has said their can be smallish holes that can appear on a fin part of the fish and i have seen many fish at shows with similar and the reason i asked is because i thought i see one of mine had a small hole and will have a look when i hook em out.

Hi Gazza, no idea how common that is but one of mine has one, only noticed it yesterday. It's a perfect round hole & you could probably get a pin through, maybe slightly bigger. No sign of fin rot, just a hole....Mike

Strange...It's the first one I've noticed it on, on the fin anyway :o

Probably totally un-related, but for ages my kohaku had a similar sized & perfectly round hole on it's head, all gone now though...odd..Mike

Gazza,

Your not alone there with this one - I have a kohaku with a series of them on its dorsal fin, each one slightly smaller going back along the fin.

I shall try and get a pic and post if possible.

Very strange as its not at all red/angry like a problem, and not seemed to grow or anything.

I shall keep an eye on it and see if/how it changes.

Gazza,

So here are the holey fins, but this koi then begs the question, "do males have holey heads?"

The holes in the head appear to be an almost symmetrical pattern?

Anyone have a clue on either?

Hi Mark,

Thats just what i am speaking about and do you think i can see them on the fish i thought had them now  I will try and have them all out soon for their check over and see what the dorsals are like.

I wonder if this does only effect the dorsal  :?:

Hey that is a funny head and i have to say i have not noticed that ion any of mine before and will have to have a closer look although i think mine are all girls :D

 I have got rid of most of my mutts, hoping the males were mostly amongst em, but this one is still a decent enough koi for now, even as male!

I was wondering though if its possibly a minor form of dermocystidium as they leave tell tale craters, but it just seems to symmetrical to be that, so I thought it must be something 'male' related, like spawning spots, but in reverse?
