Hi Craig

My pond vacuum works the same way. Annoying isn't it?

I think the only way you could get continual movement of water through would be if you had a raise pond with the vacuum below the water level, in effect turning it into a siphon. I don't know if this can damage the machine because I have never tried it. In fact I got so peed off with using the thing after 2 attempts it now sits in my garage like a derelict Dalek.

Cheers

yep thats the way they work, because its just a vaccumn cleaner it sucks until the chamber is full. theres a little float inside that shuts it off, when its of the vaccumn disapears so the water pours out the botttom pipe.

its a bit of a pain, but i emptied my whole pond with one, the delay between fill and empty allows the water to soak away :D
only thing i noticed is when you do a lot of vaccing the filter inside gets yucky and that makes the float stick so it becomes intermittent, something to watch out for

have just built a pond with a bottom drain, so am hoping i will not have to use it too often
